"A wake-up call for us" With all the information about the pioneering role of the Chinese SMEs, the expert posed the question: Can we keep up? And answered it clearly: "Yes, we can keep up with any country, including China or the USA, if we not only question others, but also ourselves." Germany needs a new "economic giant" vision, she said. Not least because Germany slipped out of the "top 3" in patent applications from 2003 to 2020 as an indicator of innovative strength and was overtaken by China. "This is a wake-up call for us," Dr. Hänle emphasised.

Perhaps some of you were a little surprised. A keynote speech on "China's SMEs and our future in Europe" at the annual event of the Balingen Economic Development Forum? That's only something for the "big players".

But Dr. Fabian Hänle's speech was convincing! Again and again, he interspersed points of reference and thus also took the smaller and medium-sized companies in the hall with him. Fabian Hänle serves as Chief Sales Officer (CSO) and Executive Board Member of the globally operating FATH Group, a German world market leader in industrial automation. From 2013 to 2021, he lived and worked in China as CEO, building the Chinese subsidiary of Blickle—a German world market leader in wheels and caster technology—from the ground up and developing it into one of the leading players in the Chinese market. He holds a doctorate on international business and economic internationalisation between Europe and China, with a particular focus on political and regulatory framework conditions. He teaches as an Adjunct Professor at Antwerp Management School. As multi-book author and international keynote speaker, Fabian Hänle supports senior decision-makers in business and politics. He speaks fluent Mandarin.

Fabian Hänle studied International Business at Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) and as a scholarship recipient at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). While serving as CEO in China, he completed the Executive MBA program of Mannheim Business School and Tongji University Shanghai, graduating as the top-ranked participant of his cohort. Continuing his commitment to bridging practice and theory, he earned his doctorate through the Executive PhD program of Antwerp Management School and the University of Antwerp. In 2024, he was appointed Professor and Adjunct Faculty Member. He is the author of multiple books and has published academic research in international, peer-reviewed journals.
